BCS Interterm

Interterm 1970s

Since the 1970s, Interterm has been a signature experiential learning program at Bethany Christian Schools, offering students of all grades the chance to engage in meaningful, hands-on learning beyond the traditional classroom. This distinctive program allows students to explore new interests, gain real-world experiences, and develop valuable life skills through a variety of local, regional, and distance activities.

Interterm 1970s

Interterm has evolved over the years ranging from being a two-week experience or a one-week session before now settling into its current format of two 3-day sessions—one between quarters 1 and 2 and the other between quarters 3 and 4. During this time, students select from a wide range of immersive courses and activities, while teachers have the opportunity to share their passions by leading classes or experiences outside of their regular curriculum.

Some Interterm experiences are grade-specific traditions. Seniors gain practical career insights in job shadowing, whereas students in grades K-8 take part in their unique Wilderness Experiences, building teamwork and outdoor skills through nature-based activities.

Our Interterm program continues to offer students immersive, hands-on learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom. In the 2024-2025 academic year, the school hosted two Interterm sessions: the first from October 9–11, 2024, and the second from March 12–14, 2025.

Throughout its history, Interterm has included a diverse array of experiences, such as:

  • Global exploration: Traveling to Turkey, where students engaged with the country’s rich history and culture.

  • Outdoor adventures: Canoe camping in Kentucky and biking in Florida, fostering resilience and teamwork.

  • Political engagement: Studying politics firsthand with a trip to Washington, D.C.

  • Local learning: Visiting museums throughout Elkhart County to explore regional history and art.

  • Pop culture studies: Analyzing how Star Wars has influenced culture and entertainment.

  • Service opportunities: Volunteering in the North Carolina hurricane cleanup, helping communities in need.
