2021 Outstanding Service Awards

At the end of every school year the Bethany board, staff, and teachers gather together for a time of fellowship, reflection and recognition! This year, Micheal Yeakey was named Teacher of the Year and Tara Swartzendruber Landis was named Outstanding Community Contribution.

Michael has been at Bethany for twelve years and is our 11th & 12th grade English teacher, one of our track and field coaches, weight lifting teacher, Sightline admin and forensic coach. He started Bethany's forensics program in 2009, whose team members have won honors at the state level and advanced to national competition. He has been a local and district leader, helping other schools establish programs. Michael has also been honored nationally, earning his second diamond pin from the National Forensic League in 2018-19.

Michael is committed to his students' growth. He believes in a student's ability to succeed.” -Bethany Parent

“He is one of the most kind and compassionate people/ teachers I know. He holds you accountable while still being understanding when you are struggling. He makes class engaging and challenging. He has high expectations for his students and he makes you want to reach them! He taught me how to write like I meant it, speak like I had power, listen like nothing else mattered.” -Bethany Student

Tara has been with Bethany for four years and is our Food Service Director and the Farm to School Coordinator. Tara works hard at developing and cultivating the local network of food providers, helps with the Bethany garden, plans the lunch menu, and provides Bethany with the most delicious and nutritious school lunches we’ve ever seen. She continually works to improve the logistics, nutrition, and environmental impact of the cafeteria.  She has a passion to provide and promote healthy choices.

“I love that Tara incorporates multicultural cuisine to help us all expand our global education - through food and embraces feedback to continue to improve.” -Bethany Teacher

“She positively impacts the lives of both students and staff - not only in her role as cafeteria/food services manager but also as a friend to all. Her passion for students as well as spearheading the Farm to School Initiative are further evidence that she qualifies for this award.” -Bethany Staff Member

Both of these awards are funded by a generous Bethany family to affirm and recognize the work of dedicated teachers at Bethany.
