Zoe Willems, a fifth-grader at Bethany, was a district winner in the Elks National Hoop Shoot Contest at Munster on Saturday, Jan. 14. Competing in the girls age 10-11 division, Willems made 19 of 25 to advance to the state contest on Saturday, Feb. 25, in New Castle. She did not advance beyond the state contest.
Tyson Chupp, also a fifth-grader at Bethany, was runner up in the district boys competition this year. Last year he was the Indiana and Great Lakes Regional champion in the boys 8-9 division and advanced to nationals in Chicago.
Both Willems and Chupp advanced to the district level by winning school and then county-level competitions.
